I absolutely LOVE The Livin La Vida Low Carb Show (and Keto Talk, and Low Carb Conversations!!!). I work as a nurse in Sweden and I’m super interested in endocrinology and how the effect food can have on the body. My sister has PCOS (the advice she gets from her doctor is a big joke and no one has ever heard about keto and if they have they say that it’s bad of course…!). I’d love to ask Dr Nally what he thinks is the best way to treat this condition. My sister is super thin although she eats A LOT! Is birth control pills really the only way to keep the cysts away or can a keto diet make her condition better?

High dietary carbohydrate load could have detrimental effect on heart function

1. Does a ketogenic diet work well for explosive athletes as it does for endurance athletes?

Hi Jimmy & Doc Muscles!
I am a 28 year old female, in good health, and have gone through almost 2 years of my own health and fitness journey. I started a sport called Crossfit (I’m sure you’ve heard of it) almost 2 years ago.  Because my coaches are SO great, I haven’t encountered any negative experiences with the sport that you often hear of. Instead, I have seen massive health benefits for my mind and body. Besides going from 28%to 22% body fat (I’m 5’3” and 141 lbs), I’ve experienced greater stamina, mental clarity, sleep, and better performance at work as a traveling musician on the road. I’ve even competed as an amateur in 3 competitions.

I experimented with paleo-style eating, and even high carb low-fat (aaahh!), high protein, etc while being a Crossfitter, but recently I was on a tour overseas,  and living on a tour bus makes it hard to do my typical explosive, heavy-weight, anaerobic exercise. So I tried keto. About 3 weeks in I am seeing a 2.5 reading on my ketone blood meter daily, and I am feeling really good.

Here’s comes the question, I promise.

I haven’t yet had enough time back home doing Crossfit and Olympic lifting to see if ketosis is improving, worsening, or making my athletic performance the same. I know ketosis works great for endurance athletes. It even works well for bodybuilders doing hypertrophy-type training. But I am not doing either of those types of training. Instead, I do Olympic style lifts (requires explosive movement) and other VERY intense explosive movements like jumping up high surfaces, gymnastic movements, & all out sprinting.

Does a ketogenic diet work well for explosive athletes the same as it works for endurance athletes and bodybuilders?


2. Can I take a pain reliever like Aleve or Advil while eating keto?

I’m in ketosis. I normally don’t take anti-inflammatory meds, but I tweaked my back and was wondering if IB or other NSAID’s would bump me out of ketosis?

I am doing good on my low carb way of living and am now keto adapted. My question is this. I have been diagnosed with tennis elbow and have been prescribed Naproxen for the pain and inflammation. Is it ok to take or will it kick me out of being keto adapted. I would rather wait for it to heal slowly if that is what would happen. I don’t want anything to ruin the way I feel and the lost in weight that I am experiencing while eating this way. I eat 5% carbs – 15% protein – 80% fat. I feel so alive and energized eating like this. Could you tell me whether it is good to take the Naproxen or whether I should just wait it out.

Hi Jimmy,

I have been doing the ketogenic diet, but concerned that I am getting way too many calories. I remember Dr. Thomas Seyfried saying in a podcast that the ketogenic diet is only effective if done in the context of calorie restriction. Otherwise, could result in too much inflammation. Is there something to this?

I’ve always heard that one should not count calories. My problem however is that, while I can go for long periods of time without eating, when I do eat lunch and dinner, I seem to be a bottomless pit. I add 2 tablespoons of fat to each meal. If I add in more fat in order to reduce my hunger, I’m concerned I will get way too many calories. Last night for example, I hate over 2000 cal before I was satiated, and even then I barely was…

I am 5’3, weigh about 118 pounds and am moderately active. How do I figure out what is the optimal caloric intake for a ketogenic diet?

    Forest Gump. LOL
    Ibuprofen has not disturbed my own keto. Now it is very rare I get a headaches since doing fasting combined with keto but ibroprofen does the trick.

      Sure, don’t eat Ibuprofen while fasting, not good on an empty stomach. But I was actually getting headaches after eating again when I first started fasting so would only get a headache on a full stomach anyway so eating ibuprofen on a full stomach is OK. I usually take 2 x 200mg tabs and it works within 30mins.

      For anyone who finds this… Be warned about Naproxen. I was prescribed it a few years ago for bad nerve pain due to sciatica (now solved thanks to Dr Bookspan plus losing 70lbs). I was on the Naproxen for 1 week. It sent me insane. I felt soooo depressed. I was really worried about myself and thought about suicide. I replaced the Naproxen with full European dose of Ibuprofen (total of 1800mg spread throughout the day, taking 2-4 200mg pills every 4 hours) since the pain was so bad. I got my sanity back. Those Naproxen are weird and dangerous. Just putting this out there as my experience as I have not had depression since.

    I agree totally. Lean protein makes me crazy hungry. Could just eat and eat and eat. Since I upped the fat I find satiety easier.
