KEY QUOTE: “When you first start a ketogenic diet, your blood sugar is gonna drop because you’re no longer putting sugar or starch into the body. You could see blood sugar possibly get in the 60s and 50s and feel fine. The liver will maintain this glucose level and you’ll find 70-110 will be a normal level over time while keto long-term.” — Dr. Adam Nally

Here’s what Jimmy and Adam talked about in Episode 31:

– Should I fast after drinking alcohol to get back into ketosis quickly?

Dear Jimmy and Dr. Adam,

I’m a Brazilian Ketonian and just discovered your podcast. I’ve already listened to all of your episodes. Thank you so much for your excellent work! It has really helped me on my keto journey!

I started LCHF/Paleo four months ago and one month ago I went completely keto thanks to your podcast. My question is this: I used to have some beer (5 cans) every month and I would like to keep up this occasional cheat. Is it a good tactic to do a 24 hour fast just after drinking the beers as a means for reentering ketosis as quickly as possible? Are there any risks associated with entering a fast with alcohol still in the system?

Thank you very much from Brazil!

Marcelo

1. Is it possible to undereat while on a ketogenic diet?

Hi Jimmy and The Doc,

I can’t tell you how much I love this podcast and look forward to it every week! My question is whether you can undereat on a ketogenic diet? I’ve been keto almost two years now and I started working out more, but I’m just not hungry enough throughout the day to eat any more than 1000 calories a day. I know the keto way of eating is satiating, but do I need to push myself to get in more calories? I have gained weight, been tired, and it takes me forever to heal muscle pain after a workout. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gina

2. Do varying levels of blood sugar negate the benefits that come from nutritional ketosis?

Hi Jimmy and Doc Nally,

I have listened to all of your Keto Talk podcasts and I am always anxious to listen to the next. Awesome job you guys. Keep up the great work. I am a “health nut”, not always living healthy but always wanting to learn and live the best healthy lifestyle I can. I am 52 years old, about 190 pounds and 5’10” tall. I started eating keto with intermittent fasting about 6 weeks ago and am loving it.

This week, I purchased glucose strips to start measuring my blood sugar as well, which has lead to some confusion. My glucose averages less than 81 (4.5 mmol), but on a few occasions as low as 61 (3.4 mmol) and I feel great. On the few very recent occasions that I have tested my glucose and ketones at the same time, I don’t really see a “strong” correlation between the two. For instance my glucose could be at (4 mmol) and my ketones at (2 mmol); then another time my glucose still at (4 mmol) and my now ketones at (4.5 mmol).

My question is this: even though my blood ketones are at 4 mmol, am I still getting the therapeutic effects of being in ketosis regardless of where my blood sugar level is at? Is it a matter of just having the ketones present or are the benefits relative to the glucose concentration when it comes to efficacy?

Thanks again. One of your countless dedicated Ketonian groupies.

3. What is the best time to test for ketosis?

Hi guys,

Love your podcast. When is the best time to test for ketosis? I’ve heard somewhere a recommendation to test at the same time every day. What time would that be? Before or after meals? How long before or after a meal? Please help me understand this.

Thanks,

Michael

KEY QUOTE: “If you test ketones in the morning after an overnight fast, know that will tend to be your lowest reading of the day. The highest ketone readings tend to happen in the evening at least four hours after your last meal. It’s generally about double the number of the morning reading.” — Jimmy Moore

KETO TALK MAILBOX:

Hey Jimmy & The Doc,

In one of your recent podcasts, The Doc mentioned that you don’t need to have surgery to have excess skin removed after losing a large amount of weight. Is that true for all forms of weight loss or just something with the ketogenic diet? I’ve lost over 100 pounds in six months going from 300 pounds to my current weight of 194—most of it happened with calorie restriction.

I still have quite a bit of excess skin and I’m wondering if a ketogenic lifestyle could have helped me avoid that. All that said, I have been on a ketogenic diet for the past several weeks and have no plans of ever stopping thanks to the raised energy levels, mental clarity and improvements to my arthritis. My biggest wish is that I discovered ketogenic diets back in February when I started this!

Thanks so much for everything you guys do. We are very fortunate to have both of you as experts in this field.

Karl
